Dr. Sagan King recognizes adolescence is characterized by various changes and obstacles that may require additional assistance to navigate. Her experience has included addressing the variety of issues teens struggle with on a daily basis. As such, Dr. King strives to foster an environment that is non-judgmental and empathic, and values developing a collaborative therapeutic relationship with each teen that can aid in growth and change. Furthermore, she focuses on providing supportive psychotherapy as well as helping adolescents develop coping skills to deal with stressors, skills to improve communication with others, strategies to establish boundaries, gain insight, and exploration of their personal values. Dr. King finds creative and unique ways for adolescents to process their emotions and effectively express themselves while incorporating empirically-based treatments, such as Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for emotion regulation, Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT). She generally has no difficulty establishing and maintaining rapport with teens and helping them engage in the therapeutic process. Dr. King has a passion for working with adolescents and began her career focused on helping children and teens in the juvenile justice system. Her extensive experience working with teens spans from private practice, school environments, hospitals, and correctional settings. Her background includes working with children with a variety of presentations, including behavior difficulties, social skills problems, depression, anxiety, trauma, disabilities, at-risk children, and the spectrum of challenges we face during adolescence. In addition to therapy, Dr. King enjoys using psychological and educational assessment to help adolescents and their families better understand the child’s strengths and how to best serve their learning style.
